Sunday, October 12, 2008

i was blog-hopping when i read a post about overtraining.
so here it goes..

OVERTRAINING
Overtraining is the result of excessive training and inadequate recovery and causes long-term physican and mental fatigue. It's a serious problem in many sports because many coaches and athletes alike embrace the "more the better" attitude. More isn't better; it's not just just the quantity of training that counts, but the quality as well. Your role as physical trainer is to help your athletes achieve optimal fitness for your sport, finding that zone between under- and overtrainining.

How do you determine when athletes are overtraining? Some common signs are listed next. Taken individually that are not very indicative of overtraining, but if you see several signs, you should suspect overtraining and work with the athlete to find the right balance of training and rest.

Signs of overtraining:
-sudden or gradual decline in performance
-inability to train at levels previously reached
-loss of coordination
-increased muscle soreness
-increased resting heart rate
-insomnia
-loss of appetite
-headache
-decreased body fat
-increased susceptibility to illness, cold, and flu
-depression, apathy
-loss of self-esteem
-emotional instability
-fear of competition

The most effective cure for overtrained athletes is REST
